I know, I know you’re busy and planning seems to be a real effort. Besides it doesn’t seem like real work as it involves a certain amount of day dreaming before you get stuck into the nitty gritty of transforming it into a plan.
And day dreaming doesn’t feel like work, do you know why? When you were a kid at school how often were you told off for looking out the window or ‘drifting off’? We have this knocked into us at a very early age, so is it any wonder when it comes to business it doesn’t feel like we’re actually doing anything?
Look at all the great inventions or discoveries over the years, there’s been a lot of hard work involved but the breakthrough normally comes through a dream or when their mind is wandering – like Einstein and his Theory of Relativity. When it comes to business do you think Richard Branson allows himself to day dream? I bet it’s a major part of his job, being creative and thinking outside the box.
So why dreaming? Because that’s part of setting your business and personal goals. It’s really difficult to create a plan if you don’t know where you’re going. Imagine leaving home and you haven’t decided on your destination. The world is your oyster, you can go in any direction you want! But that gives you a lot of decisions to make – should you turn left or right when you leave the house, what about when you get to the end of the street? What happens when you find that you’ve gone ‘round in circles? You need to know your destination and it’s the same with your business. It will go ‘round in circles too unless you set its direction.
It’s way too easy to get sucked into the day to day ‘doing’ of the business and fighting the fires that inevitably arise from this. When the aim could be to train someone else in your team to become a fire fighter allowing you the time to set the direction of the business and then get the planning done.
My suggestion is, if you don’t have a plan, take half a day out of your business and away from your workplace to allow yourself to dream. Go somewhere you can relax and let go and think about what you would like for yourself and your family personally over the coming year and then do the same for your business. Once you’ve got that then it’s a lot simpler to get your plan together.
